在英语中，except与besides均有“除了”之意，但在肯定句中，二者的语义侧重与使用场景存在显著差异。在否定句中这种差别就消失了。
一、两词在肯定句中的核心区别
except表示“不包括；把……排除在外”，在肯定句中强调从整体中剔除某个特定对象，即“整体成立，仅该对象是例外”即except把它之后的个例排除在整体之外的意思；如：
They all came except Matt.
除马特外他们都来了。
We work every day except Sunday.
我们除星期天外每天都工作。
Our dresses were the same except mine was red.
我们的连衣裙是一样的，只是我的那件是红色。
Ida would not speak to him except to answer questions.
除了回答问题，艾达都不和他说话。
All of his body relaxed except his right hand.
除了右手外，他全身都放松了。
而besides表示“除……之外（还）”，在肯定句中则侧重“除去的个例和整体（或前面的一部分）都符合句意”，暗含“仅有，还有，不但”之意。常常强调整体（或前面的一部分），而以besides用来引出的事物作陪衬；有时也可以强调所补充的内容如：
He was the only person besides Gertrude who talked to Guy
他是除了格特鲁德外唯一同盖伊说话的人。
Fruit will give you, besides enjoyment, a source of vitamins
水果不但好吃，而且富含维生素。
I think she has many good qualities besides being very beautiful.

二、在否定句中这种差别就消失了，也就是说在否定句中这两个词用法和含义趋同。如：
No one passed except Richard.
除了理查德之外,谁也没有考及格。
No one passed besides Richard.

She doesn't have feelings for anyone except /besides him.
除了他，她对任何人都没有感觉。
He isn't attracted to anyone except /besides her.
除了她，他不对任何人动心。
I care for nothing except /besides this.
除了这个之外,我什么都不要。
Besides/ except criticizing everything we said, he did very little.
他除了批评我们准所说的一切事情之外,几乎没有做什么事。
(注意:这个含有little的句子也是否定句)。
