初中英语中，when引导的定语从句是重点语法点，常出现在考试和记叙文写作里。它主要用来修饰表示时间的先行词，像day、time、year、season这类词，when在从句中充当时间状语，把先行词和定语从句连接起来。
比如常用的句型I'll never forget the day when加从句，特别适合记叙文里描述难忘经历。比如I'll never forget the day when we first met，这句话可以拆成两部分：I'll never forget the day和We first met on the day。这里的on the day被when代替，when引导的从句紧跟在先行词the day后面，准确修饰这个时间点。再比如This was the time when he arrived，when代替了at the time，在从句里作时间状语，说明他到达的具体时间。
when引导的定语从句还能和“介词+which”互换使用。比如This was the time when he arrived可以改成This was the time at which he arrived，On which、in which、during which等搭配要根据先行词的具体时间来选。但要注意，如果先行词是时间名词，但在从句中作主语或宾语，就得用关系代词which或that。比如I remember the days which we spent together，这里days在从句中作spent的宾语，所以不能用when，得用which。
在记叙文写作里，when引导的定语从句很实用。比如描述得到第一只小狗的经历，可以写I'll never forget the day when I got my first puppy；或者用There was a time when…的句式，比如There was a time when people didn't worry about pollution，这类句子能让文章更有画面感。
考试中常考的题目也围绕这些知识点。比如选择题I'll never forget the day ______ we met in the park，选项有what、which、when、that，因为从句we met in the park结构完整，缺的是时间状语，所以选when。再比如Do you remember the year ______ Hong Kong returned to China，先行词是year，从句结构完整，缺时间状语，也得选when。
掌握when引导定语从句的关键，就是先看先行词是不是时间名词，再看从句是不是缺时间状语——缺时间状语就用when，缺主语或宾语就用which或that。这样不管是考试做题还是写作应用，都能准确使用这个语法点。
