允许某人做某事，要用动词不定式短语作宾语补足语。若允许做某事，allow后可以接动名词作宾语，即allow doing sth，不能用动名词复合结构。
1. allow sb to do sth允许某人做某事
His parents won't allow him to stay out late.
他的父母不会允许他在外待得很晚。
He allowed his mind to wander.
他听任自己的思绪信马由缰。
My father does not allow me to smoke.
我父亲不许我抽烟。
They don’t allow students to smoke in the class-room.
他们不允许学生在教室抽烟。
My boss doesn't allow me to use the telephone.我的老板不允许我用电话。
My parents don't allow me to watch my cell phone at night. 我父母不允许我晚上看手机。

2. allow doing sth允许做某事
We do not allow smoking in the hall.

3. be allowed to do sth 被允许做某事
allow用于被动语态时，必须接动词不定式作宾语补足语，不能接动名词形式。
If a student does not attend all the classes, s/ he will not be allowed to take the exam.

I was allowed to do whatever I wanted with my life.

Nobody under 18 is allowed to buy alcohol.
